Tutorial: Working with Multiple Stocks: Work with Groups of Data

Work with Groups of Data

i   Tutorial Task
Apply an entry/exit system to an entire group of stocks.

Processing in TradingSolutions can be done on individual stocks or entire groups of data. For example, you could calculate a financial indicator for every stock that you are actively trading. Or, you could create a prediction for every stock in a particular industry or sector.

i   General Note about this Activity
This activity shows you how a field can be created for multiple stocks at once using an entry/exit system. However, this technique can be used for any type of field. For example, you could try different trading approaches by creating models of the optimal signal or apply trading solutions to all of the stocks in a group and comparing the results.

Step-by-step Instructions

1.    Select Add New Field… from the context menu for “Tutorial Data” in the Portfolio View.

From the context menu for “Tutorial Data” in the Portfolio View, select Add New Field… to display the Create a Field Wizard.

2.    The remainder of the steps are the same as when we applied an entry/exit system to a single stock. On the Create a Field Wizard: Select Type page, select Apply a rule-based entry/exit system and press Next.

The process is the same for applying an entry/exit system to a group as it is for applying one to a single data series. Select Apply a rule-based entry/exit system and press the Next button. This will display the Apply an Entry/Exit System Wizard.

3.    Use the Apply an Entry/Exit System Wizard to apply “Relative Strength Index System” from the “Basic Indicator Systems” group with the default inputs.

You should be familiar with the remainder of the process of applying an entry/exit system. Select “Relative Strength Index System” from the “Basic Indicator Systems” and accept the defaults for the remainder of the options.

After you press the Finish button, TradingSolutions will calculate and analyze this new entry/exit system for each of the stocks in “Tutorial Data”.

4.    TradingSolutions will display a Status Dialog while it is calculating the fields for each stock. When it is finished, the Status Dialog will disappear.

5.    (optional) Select Analyze Signals… from the context menu for any of the data series in “Tutorial Data” to analyze the new signal.

By applying this entry/exit system at the group level, this field is now defined for all of the data series in that group. You can confirm this by analyzing the signals for each of the data series and locating the analysis of the “Relative Strength Index System”.

Ä    Note: This was an example of how a technique could be applied to multiple stocks at one time. The signal produced by this example may not be profitable for all of the stocks we applied it to.

Once a field is applied to a group, any new data series that are added to that group will also receive that processing.

i   Reminder
Remember, this technique can be used for more than just entry/exit systems. You can create any calculation, prediction, or analysis for every data series in a group. You can even apply trading solutions to entire groups of stocks!

Congratulations, you have learned how to work with groups of data by applying an entry/exit system at the group level. This same technique can be used for financial indicators, predictions, and even entire trading solutions.
